Once again, another celebrity that does not practice what they preach. On June 1st, YouTuber ‘Neekolul’, Best known for her ‘ok boomer’ TikTok, which featured her dancing around in a Bernie Sanders T-shirt, has recently bought a mansion worth $2 million and filmed a tour of it for YouTube. This usually would not be any cause for news and there would be nothing wrong with this, except from the fact that this YouTuber is also known for her socialist seems in videos, where she quotes famous socialist slogans such as ‘tax the rich’. This meant that her apartment tour video received massive backlash, with many people calling her a hypocrite and saying that she has become ‘what she’s been pandering against’ for the past few years.

Due to this, Neeko has switched off likes/dislikes and comments on the video, as dislikes outnumbered likes by almost ten times. Despite the hate, many of her supporters have come to her defence, saying that advocating for taxing the rich does not mean she must stay poor, and that they are proud of her success. Some people have decided to remain neutral about the situation by saying that she could’ve been more modest about the tour, rather than boldly highlighting that her apartment cost $2 million.

What also angered fans is her response to the situation. In her response video, She did not speak in detail about the apartment or about her political views, but simply stated that she is making a lot of money from the video and does not care about the massive like to dislike ratio as she can simply turn them off.

However, a few people have noticed that a few months back, Neeko stated that by ‘tax the rich’, she meant BILLIONAIRES with a huge amount of wealth rather than millionaires. This sort of backtracking seemed to coincide with the rise of her fame and money, likely. Also, this makes sense, considering many people replied to the video that everybody is a socialist until they make their own money. However, this is not uncommon. This is not the first time that we have seen celebrities not practising what they preach. From Leonardo DiCaprio preaching about climate change whilst flying around in private jets, to Lily Allen crying about migrant children whilst living in one of the whitest areas in the country, this is all too common. Now that’s not to say that these celebrities are bad people or don’t care about the issue, but it is clear to see that amongst celebrities and the rich, there is a clear ‘do as I say, not as I do’ attitude amongst social issues.

Unfortunately, as annoying as it is to see celebrities virtue signalling and trying to appeal to everyone using politics rather than talent, it was pushed by society itself. Why is it that every time there is a serious issue people expect celebrities to respond to it? Since when did we look to millionaires and billionaires to tell us what is right or wrong? During the height of the Black Lives Matter and Free Palestine movements, some celebrities have been attacked, and even in some cases ‘cancelled’ for staying silent and/or not showing their support; And whilst it is good when celebrities genuinely care about social issues, the forcing of celebrities to care about them has led to the majority of them doing nothing more than virtue signalling whilst not actually caring that much at all.

At the end of the day, actions speak louder than words. So no matter how much Neeko preaches about socialism and taxing the rich, the fact that she is backtracking and completely unapologetic Now that she is rich shows her real views about the situation. Again, this does not mean that she is a bad person, there is nothing wrong with growing and changing your views as you learn more and get older, and we need to normalise this. But there is a problem with preaching one thing whilst practising another, and in society we need to stop expecting so much from celebrities. An actor’s job is to act, A singer’s job is to sing, an author’s job is to write, neither of these people are humanitarians or charity workers, so do not need to speak out against any social issue unless they feel like they want to. Stop forcing celebrities to speak out against important issues, this way you will find out who truly cares.
